Purpose statement:
The Operation Manager will be responsible for the management of the regional engineering,  Company infrastructure , installation and maintenance activities of all Vodacom Teleports  and customer premises equipment that falls within his domain of the region.
Principal Accountabilities/Objectives:
  • Participation in the structuring of the Field Operations Departments and the compilation of  associated job descriptions to meet the functional requirements of the Department.  
  • Development, documentation and implementation of operational processes for the  installation and maintenance of customer and Gateway equipment. 
  • Management of the operation and maintenance activities of the all the teleports under his  domain.  
  • Management of the corrective maintenance activities in Central African sub-region and co-ordination of the fault  analysis activities where international service providers or the other area teams are involved to  achieve service level agreement requirements.  
  • Management of the preventative Maintenance activities in accordance with support  agreement requirements. 
  • Ensuring that good co-operation and teamwork exists between the Field Operations Engineers, the Network Operations Center and other Area support personnel to achieve the  earliest and most effective implementation and restoration of services.
  • Ensuring that adequate and accurate feedback regarding the progress with corrective  maintenance is passed to the Network Control Center for transfer to the customers. 
  • Analyse faulty ticket trends and recommend preventative maintenance steps.
  • Identification and specification of infra-structure, test equipment and tools necessary to  improve the delivery of service. 
  • Participation in the staffing of the Department (Region). This entails the identification of the  capabilities required for immediate and future operations, the recruitment, training,  development planning and motivation of personnel.  
  • Management of the personnel directly under your control. This entails job allocation and  scheduling, routine performance measurement against job description and task requirements  and associated corrective action planning, timekeeping and leave scheduling. 
  • Create trouble shooting guidelines and processes.  
  • Build a culture of accountability. 
  • Propose Training requirement for Engineers under your control. 
  • Compilation of Regional monthly reports.  
  • Ensuring constant availability of spares in his domain for site intervention visit. 
  • To be a buffer zone between Management and the staff under his control.
Objectives/ KPI’s Operational Functions: 
To achieve the following:
  1. Reduce SLA penalties payments from previous year - Target is 30%. 
  2. Reduce poor installation related maintenance visits - target is zero within first 6 months  after installation. 
  3. Monthly fault maintenance visits: - 8% of network base target which translates to about  1 visit/site/year).  
  4. Reduce multiple maintenance visits/fault - Target zero for a 12 month period after the  last visit when the fault is caused due to Vodacom. Result of failure must be clear – route  cause analysis must be done.  
  5. Reduce MTTR to acceptable value - 4hrs max (excluding travel time) is proposed.
  6. Reduce installation period to minimum - Target is < 2days for VSAT installs and 1 day for  Airlink/ Metro, SAF MW as per site requirements. 
  7. Management site visits - 2 site quality visits per month by either the regional manager or  the senior engineer.  
  8. Ensure availability of minimum spare levels.
Communications and Work Relationships: 
  • Good experience of team management & Client handling.  
  • Good interpersonal & communication skills –written & verbal. 
  • Coordination with various departments within organization.
Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competency requirements: 
  • B.Eng. or HND in Telecom/Electrical /Electronic Engineering with minimum of 10 years’  experience.  
  • Good hands-on practical telecommunication experience of not less than Ten (10) Years. 
  • Self-starter, positive attitude, does not shy away from taking responsibility. Team player with  excellent communications skills. 
  • Honest, Competent, Forward-looking, Inspiring, Intelligent, Fair-minded, Broad-minded,  Courageous, Straightforward, Imaginative. 
  • He/she must be healthy and not known to be suffering any disabilities that could affect the  responsibilities of the job function.
